First of all, I want to say I did read the book by Bill O-Reilly and it was excellent. I can’t say the same thing about the movie that was shown on the National Geographic Channel.
When I read a book or watch a movie about Jesus, I compare it to what the Bible says; and if there are omissions or outright things added that are contrary to what the Bible says, then it is inaccurate, as historians and history itself have already proven that the books of the Bible are accurate.
Okay, on to the movie. Unlike the book that really gave a good background of Roman life, the movie skipped over this almost entirely with the exceptions of how the main rulers of Jesus time lived. You might call them sneak peeks even.
I do like how they showed the Romans going to kill the children in an attempt to kill the up and coming King. It really made you think just how evil Herod was.
In the movie, Joseph seemed to “just know” that it wasn’t safe for them to stay in Bethlehem and they had to get out of there. The Bible tells us though that an Angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him. Matthew 2:13 …”behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.” The same thing happened in Egypt when it was time to go back. In the movie, Joseph figured out on his own from travelers that Herod was dead and that it must be time to go back. The Bible says though in Matthew 2:19-20 ” But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.
The movie is dual in it’s thinking of showing first Jesus as wise when they brought out how he spoke to the teachers at the temple. This is taken from Luke 2:46-49, which would be correct. It reads ”
After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
But then the next scene when he meets John the Baptist, Jesus is questioning who He really is with John saying he is only a carpenter. This is contrary to the scripture we just read in Luke 2:49 ….”Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” We see from this scripture that He already knew His calling and He knew that Joseph was only his earthly father. In the King James version of the Bible verse 49 reads: “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” Once again proving that Jesus already knew His calling even at the age of 12.
Jesus went to the wilderness after being baptized by John to hear from God, but they didn’t go through how Satan tempted him and his battle with Satan. Disappointing. But at least they did show that he cast out the demons of the little boy later on in the movie.
Let’s talk about Judas the trader of Jesus. They show he was paid 30 pieces of silver which is correct and how after the capture of Jesus he was sorrowful which is correct too, but he didn’t pay a goat herder his silver for a piece of rope to hang himself. What he did do was take it back to the chief priests and threw the pieces of silver on the floor back at them showing repentance of what he had done. (Matthew 27:3-8) It was after this he hung himself.
During the path of Jesus to Golgotha they had Jesus in the movie saying how much he loved the man who was leading him to his death. Nowhere in the Gospels does he say this. It’s really by Jesus actions at this point that he is showing His love.
I do like in the movie where the Roman who was hanging the sign above Jesus heard what Jesus said and repeated it to the Roman who lead Jesus to Golgotha saying that God forgive them for they know not what they do, and how it impacted not only the Roman who hung the sign, but also the Roman who lead Jesus to his death.
At the tomb, after Jesus had risen, they showed in the movie that the Burial face cloth was just laying there. This is a detail that is totally incorrect. John 20:7 says “ And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes but wrapped together in a place by itself.” Why is this important? Because it is a detail that proves that Jesus body was not just stolen away by someone. Who would take the time to take a body from the grave and wrap the linen cloth that covered his face and place it separately from the body wrap?
Also, they portray that there we no Guards outside the tomb of Jesus, which is incorrect.
Matthew 27: 62-66
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
It’s really hard nowadays to find a movie about Jesus that is shown according to the scriptures and while I know you can’t put every detail into a movie, at least get the facts straight and don’t add things in the movie that are not in the Bible (such as how Judas bought the rope from the goat herder). It’s acceptable to add conversations that could have happened that go along with the overall theme of the Bible in a movie, but not leave out key details in scenes that are being shown that should be shown.
Overall, I’d say this movie was not worth watching.
