 Success Leaves Clues- Cary Grant
They say success leaves clues. Here’s something from Cary Grant:
He was a willing student in all areas of his life.
Historically Mae West might not be remembered as much of a mentor, but she taught Grant, if only by example, about the finer points of deal-making, Hollywood style, and the intricacies of comic timing.
Even though he was only twenty-eight years old at the time they worked together, an age when most actors are more entranced by Hollywood’s bevy of beauties than balance sheets, Grant took note of West’s contractual shrewdness. As soon as he acquired the proper leverage, he negotiated for not only a salary but a percentage of each film’s gross. In some cases, he did this so well he earned more money than the producers or directors associated with his films, including powerhouses like Alfred Hitchcock.
By the late 1940s when he was a big star, Grant became one of Hollywood’s most incisive deal makers, revealing almost visionary business acumen. His contracts stipulated that the negatives of his films revert to him seven years after their initial release; studio executives and bean counters never even put up a fight about this particular clause. Who would want to watch a picture after seven years, they reasoned? Well, millions of people, as it turned out. When television came on the scene in the early 1950s, Cary Grant movies were in great demand for slots on late-night TV. He reaped a steady windfall from the lucrative licensing fees generated by the rights of the films he controlled.
“I remember mentioning Penny Serenade in the late seventies,” recalls Peter Bogdanovich, “and he said, ‘ Oh, yes, I just got a check on that one, ‘ and I thought, Jes*s, that was in 1941 and he’d already gotten a piece of the action.”
During an interview, a question was asked of Cary Grant:  “How does one achieve success?”
Cary Grant answered “Diligence, perseverance, and enjoying what you do.”
