Why God Wants You to Stop Smoking

Yes, it’s true; God wants you to stop smoking. It doesn’t matter if you’re a new believer or an older one, God doesn’t want you to smoke.

Now, I know this is a very controversial subject, but I’m ready to take the heat and tell you the will of God without a doubt concerning this debated subject.

I hear the argument that God created all things to enjoy. Yes, God wants you to enjoy life to the fullest, there is no doubt about that. God has come to give you life, and life more abundantly according to His word. This does not mean we are to abuse what God has given us for our own pleasure though.

For example, God gave us food. If we though eat more than we need consistently it’s called Gluttony and we know God speaks directly about that gluttony is a sin. So while the food itself is not a sin, overindulging in what can bring you good nourishment is a sin.

The same goes for Sex. Sex was designed in holy matrimony of marriage between a man and a woman. The Bible says the marriage bed is undefiled. The Bible goes on the explain that we are to enjoy the wife of our youth. Take sex outside of marriage and it once again becomes a sin according to God’s Holy Word.

Now, let’s talk about cigarettes.  Is smoking a cigarette (even just one) beneficial to your body? In order to answer this we need to know what is inside a cigarette, don’t we? So let’s find out:

Besides Tobacco Extracts there are 599 additives in a cigarette. See Wikipedia for all 599 of them.

Here is a shortlist of some of them and what they are:

Ammonia: Household cleaner
Angelica root extract: Known to cause cancer in animals
Arsenic: Used in rat poisons
Benzene: Used in making dyes, synthetic rubber
Butane: Gas; used in lighter fluid
Carbon monoxide: Poisonous gas
Cadmium: Used in batteries
Cyanide: Deadly poison
DDT: A banned insecticide
Ethyl Furoate: Causes liver damage in animals
Lead: Poisonous in high doses
Formaldehiyde: Used to preserve dead specimens
Methoprene: Insecticide
Megastigmatrienone: Chemical naturally found in grapefruit juice
Maltitol: Sweetener for diabetics
Napthalene: Ingredient in mothballs
Methyl isocyanate: Its accidental release killed 2000 people in Bhopal, India in 1984
Polonium: Cancer-causing radioactive element

Now, do we really think God wants us to ingest such harmful chemicals?

Let’s prove it further that God wants you to stop smoking:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—  even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.” I Corinthians 10:31-33

So, I hear the Christian say “Well I don’t do it in front of other Christians to cause them to stumble.”  You might not be doing it in front of another believer, but don’t fool yourself. Others can smell it on you! So if you really don’t want to offend another believer, this argument is out the window. No, this is just an excuse to continue in your sin.

So…now you might say “Well I’m not hurting anyone else”  Really? Have you heard of the dangers of second-hand smoke? And let’s just say you are all alone smoking once again (I doubt it if this is the case if you have a habit of smoking, but let’s just say). You are hurting someone actually, even all alone. You are hurting your own body. What does that matter?

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;” 1 Corinthians 6:19

Do people who have a habit of smoking die from smoking? I hear you say “Well there are others that have lived to ripe old age, and they smoked.” While this may be true in many cases, let’s look at the evidence:

  • Between 33 percent and 50 percent of all smokers will die an average of 15 years sooner than a non-smoker, the Tobacco Atlas from the World Lung Foundation and the American Cancer Society believes.
  • Around 100 million people died because of tobacco use in the 20th century.
  • 10 years of life are robbed from smokers because they die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers. Smoking also steals 10 years of physical functioning in old age (making smokers act really old), according to Live Fast, Die Young, Leave a Good-Looking Corpse by David M. Burns, MD (Archives of Internal Medicine).
  • Smoking causes more death and disability than any single disease (World Health Organization).
  • A “death clock” now follows the tobacco use death toll since October 1999, just under 40 million and counting. It was set up by the World Health Organization in October 2008.
  • 650,000 Europeans die each year from tobacco-related diseases, EU figures reveal.

It’s kind of funny about smoking. It doesn’t kill you right away, but it sneaks up on you. One day you find you have cancer and the Doctor tells you, your smoking contributed to it.  Don’t ask God “Why?” if you continued to disobey and continue to smoke.

But if you’re a saint of God and have made Him Lord of your life and stopped and you still end up with cancer, my heart and prayers are with you in abundance. I can suggest some natural products to take that could possibly help, but I could not promise they would. I would say though that if you are in these type of shoes, to seek me out and try what I suggest. What do you really have to lose after all?

I understand if you’re a new believer or even an old believer struggling to quit smoking.  I know it’s not easy from others around me that have either tried to quit or have quit.

This blog really isn’t aimed at you, but rather at the Christian that wants to try to wave

their sin away by excuses. It’s my prayer that God shows you the truth though this

hard-hitting blog post that God wants to deliver you of anything harmful that does not give you the abundant life He has promised you.

It’s time to stop smoking, God wants only the best for you, and so do I.

Inspiring you to have more Wealth and Riches in every area of your life,

Dexter Black
